Dry Eye Syndrome (aka Dry Eyes)

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is one of the most common types of eye conditions that we see on a daily basis. We at EyeCare Texoma feel it is also the most underdiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and mistreated eye condition that we see. Dry Eyes can lead to a variety of symptoms including sandy, gritty eyes, burning, redness, sensitivity to light, and believe it or not watering. It can also cause vision issues such as blurriness, fatigue, difficulty reading and difficulty using a computer for long period of time.

In order to successfully treat Dry Eye Syndrome, we must first determine which form of Dry Eye you have. Typically, DES occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears (Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye) or when the tears you do produce evaporate too rapidly (Evaporative Dry Eye).

Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye – occurs when the lacrimal glands don’t produce enough of the watery component of your tears, known as the aqueous layer. Some causes are Age, Hormonal Changes, Medications, and Autoimmune Diseases.

Evaporative Dry Eye – occurs when the oil layer of the tears is of poor quality or consistency and therefore allows the aqueous layer to evaporate too rapidly. Oil glands in our eyelids called Meibomian glands produce this oil layer. These glands can become inflamed and produce a poor quality of oil due to age or due to conditions like Rosacea. Environmental factors like low humidity or extensive computer use can also contribute to evaporation.

The most common of the two types is Evaporative, with it being present in approximately 85% of dry eye cases. Each type of Dry Eye is treated differently so it is imperative to distinguish between the two when devising a treatment plan.
